Why Is My Pool Losing Water After Heavy Rain?

It sounds backwards: your pool just received several inches of rain, so why does the water level seem low again only a day or two later?

For homeowners on Florida’s Treasure Coast, this can be especially confusing during our rainy season. A heavy afternoon storm can temporarily hide a swimming pool leak by adding water faster than the pool is losing it.

Once the rain stops, however, the same leak is still there.

Heavy Rain Can Mask an Existing Pool Leak

Imagine your pool is leaking a small amount of water every day. Then a Florida storm adds two or three inches of rain.

The pool may suddenly look completely full—or even too full—and it’s easy to assume the water-loss problem has disappeared.

But if there is an active leak, it continues after the storm passes.

A few days later, you may notice the water dropping again.

Rain doesn’t fix a pool leak. It can simply make it harder to recognize for a while.

Don’t Blame Every Water-Level Change on Evaporation

Evaporation is normal in South Florida, especially during periods of heat, sunshine, wind, and lower humidity.

But repeatedly adding significant amounts of water shouldn’t automatically be dismissed as Florida weather.

Pay attention to the pattern.

If neighboring pools aren’t requiring the same amount of water—or your pool suddenly needs considerably more water than it did previously—there may be another explanation.

Watch What Happens After the Weather Clears

The days following heavy rain can actually provide useful information.

Once the weather becomes relatively consistent, note your pool’s water level. You can place a small piece of tape at the waterline or measure from a fixed point on the pool deck.

Check it again approximately 24 hours later.

If you’re seeing noticeable, repeatable water loss, it’s worth investigating.

You can also perform a bucket test, which compares water loss inside a bucket with the water loss from the swimming pool. Because both are exposed to similar weather conditions, a significant difference can indicate that something other than evaporation may be occurring.

Where Could the Water Be Going?

Swimming pools can leak from many different locations, including:

• Skimmers
• Return fittings
• Pool lights
• Main drains
• Spa components
• Structural cracks
• Underground plumbing
• Equipment or plumbing connections

The location isn’t always obvious.

A wet area beside the pool doesn’t necessarily mean the leak is directly underneath it. Water can travel underground before appearing somewhere else—or it may never become visible at the surface at all.

That’s why guessing based solely on what you can see can lead you in the wrong direction.

Florida Rain Can Also Hide Wet Areas Around the Pool

There’s another reason leaks can be difficult to spot during rainy periods on the Treasure Coast.

When the soil surrounding your home and pool is already saturated from repeated storms, an underground pool leak may not create an obvious wet spot.

Everything is already wet.

Once Florida gets several dry days, you may suddenly notice one section of the yard or pool deck remaining damp while everything around it dries.

If that’s happening and your pool is also losing water, it’s worth paying attention.
